The city of Yakutsk is located about 10.000 km from Hamburg in the republic of Sacha, in the Far East, on the river Lena. It is considered the coldest city in the world, with temperatures below -45°C in winter. The Sacha-Gymnasium in Yakutsk is a school with German lessons where students can take the German language diploma.
In 2014, an exchange of teachers laid the foundation for an educational cooperation between the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the Sacha-Gymnasium in Yakutsk.
In 2020, the educational cooperation will be used for a project with an ecological focus.
Under the motto "Bridges to climate dialogue", a group of students from a German school will fly to Yakutsk for about 10 days in March to deal with the topics of environment, climate and energy in the permafrost region together with students of the partner school.
As part of the project work, various facilities in Yakutsk and the surrounding area are visited.
In addition, there is also an insight into the history and culture of Yakutia and an experience of the special climatic conditions at temperatures down to -30 °C.
The project is aimed at students from grades 9 to 11 who are interested in German-Russian exchanges in general and in dealing with the above-mentioned topic in the German-Russian context.
We are stunned by the efforts that the Foundation German-Russian Youth Exchange has worked so far to help students gain a better understanding of nature and also strengthened their knowledge in Russian and the culture of Yakutia.
We'd like to support those students to finish their journeys and equip them with a brief grounding of the climate change.
